Specification
Germany - Weimar Republic: Patriotic Brooch
featuring the Light Cruiser "Emden" of the
German Navy.
Emden was the first large warship built in
Germany after the end of WW1 and this badge
wad issued to commemorate and fund the
event.
Maker marked on the reverse by Ferdinand
Wagner, Pforzheim.
Emden, a 6000tn Light Cruiser was launched
in 1925. She was the only ship of its class and
served mainly as a training ship with both
the Reichsmarine (German Navy of the
Weimar Republic) and the Kriegsmarine.
During WW2 Emden served in the Baltic Fleet.
In Apr. 1940 during the Invasion of Norway
(Apr. 1940) she was part of the force that
captured Oslo - the Norwegian Capital.
For the remaining of the War the ship assumed
training duties, laid mines in the Baltic and
supported the invasion of the Soviet Union.
She was damaged several times by British
bombers and in 1945 was run aground outside
the harbor of Kiel following a British air raid in
an attempt to prevent her from sinking. The
wreck was blown up to prevent her capture
and was ultimately scrapped in place in 1949.
A scarce patriotic badge.
