Great Britain: Queen Victoria Chocolate Tin
Box.
This tin box was distributed in 1899 as a gift
of Queen Victoria to each and every one of
her soldiers and officers serving at the time
in South Africa during the Boer War.
On the lid of the box: The portrait of Queen
Victoria with the inscription "South Africa
1900" and in the Queen's handwriting "I wish
you a happy New Year". Signed "Victoria Reg".
The box contained half-pound of vanilla
chocolate produced by either one of the 3
British main chocolate manufacturers: J. S.
Fry & Sons, Cadbury Brothers Limited and
Rowntree &Company Limited - all 3 of them
refused to accept payment for the order and
donated the chocolate instead.
The box was designed by Barclay and Fry
Limited in Southwark and the cost was
funded by the Queen herself. Each Chocolate
producer used different firms to supply the
tins, hence there are variations in their
dimensions, the shade of coloring and the
portrait of the Queen.
By the end of 1900 a total of 123.000 tin boxes
were manufactured.
This is the type of the tin that was used by
Cadbury Brothers Limited.
