Greece: Commemorative Medal for the 1st
Balkan War against Ottoman Turkey in 1912-
1913.
With 3 clasps: Gianitsa, Ostrovon and Ioannina.
The clasps:
- Giannitsa: The clasp was awarded for the
Battle of Giannitsa (also known as Yenidje or
Yenice), 19-20 Oct. 1912. The Greek victory
broke the last Ottoman defensive line and
opened the road towards Thessaloniki
(Salonica). The clasp is rare as only around
25000 were awarded (to the men of the II, III,
IV, VI and VII Infantry Divisions).
- Ostrovon: The clasp was awarded for the
Battle of Ostrovon (also known as Battle of
Arnissa), 4-5 Nov. 1912. The Greek victory
denied the access of fresh Ottoman troops to
the city of Ioannina. The clasp is rare as only
around 22000 were awarded (to the men of the
I, III, IV, VI Infantry Divisions, 1st Cavalry
Regiment, to the supporting Mountain Artillery
Batteries and to small Volunteer outfits).
- Ioannina: The clasp was awarded for the
Siege of Ioannina and the Battle of Bizani
(Bezanie) - 23 Jan.- 06 Mar. 1913. The clasp
is rare (aprox. 45.000 awards).
During the 1st Balkan War the alliance of
Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Serbia
liberated the remaining Christian populations
of the European territories from the Ottoman
Empire.
The War ended with the Treaty of London in
1913 but soon the 2nd Balkan War started,
this time against Bulgaria.
The medal was instituted in 1914.
