Greece: Order of Beneficence, Silver Cross (Knight),
5th Class.
The medal in the form of a flower depicts Theotokos
(Virgin Mary) with the Divine Child in Her arms with
the legend "ΕΥΠΟΙΙΑ" (Beneficence).
The Order of Beneficence was established by the
Hellenic Republic in 1975. It replaced the same
Order issued by the Hellenic Kingdom using the
same name and same insignia, although a separate
order with different statutes.
The Order of Beneficence is awarded SPARINGLY
only to women, Greek or foreign, for good services
rendered to Greece in the fields of charity, arts and
letters.
This is the scarce 1st issue of the Hellenic Republic
without the inscription "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ"
(Hellenic Republic) or the initials "ΕΔ". This type
was awarded the first years after the institution of
the Republic only to be soon replaced by the 2nd
issue of the Republic with the above mentioned
inscriptions. In 1983 the form of the Order was
amended once again to the one in use today.
