This is the rarest version of the medal, by the
French sculptur and medalist Andre Rivaud
(marked: "L. Sue pinx, A.A. Rivaud sculp,
Salonique 1917").
The Crosses of this type were made and
issued during the war on the Macedonian front.
The medal was instituted by decree of the
Revolutionary Government in 1916 and was
issued for bravery in the field during WW1,
the expedition in Soviet Russia (Ukraine -
1920) and the expedition in Asia Minor (1920 -
1922).
On the obverse with the Ancient Spartan
inscription "Η ΤΑΝ Η ΕΠΙ ΤΑΣ" (Return
victorious with your shield or return dead
on it) and "ΕΛΛΑΣ" (Hellas - Greece), 1916 -
1917 on the reverse.
