ITALY: Bronze Medal of Merit and Commemorative
Medal of the Friuli Earthquake (1976).
Rare initial type of the medal.
Signed by Giandomenico.
On the obverse: The damaged clock tower of
Colloredo (a small town in the Friuli area, right at
the epicenter of the earthquake), with structural
damage. Two hands reach out towards each other
in a gesture of offering assistance.
On the reverse: Circumscribed: The Supreme
Government Commissioner for Friuli 1976.
The medal was instituted in 1977 & was awarded
to Italians and foreigners who assisted the people
of Friuli (the extreme northeastern region of Italy)
following the earthquakes of May and Sep. 1976.
The Medals were established in 3 classes (gold,
silver, and bronze).
The medals for the military personnel (as of this
example) were called "Commemorative Medals"
and were issued only in bronze with this type of
ribbon.
The Merit Medals (for civilians) had a 4 stripe
ribbon.
The medal is rarely seen.
