ITALY: Silver commemorative medal for the
Earthquake of 1908, in Sicily and Calabria.
Official example, signed by L. Giorgi - this is the
example by the Royal Italian Mint.
With the 2nd type of ribbon (the ribbon was
amended in this form in 1910).
In its scarce box of issue with the Coat of Arms
of the Italian Kingdom on the lid.
The medal was instituted in 1910, by King
Vittorio Emmanuele III and was awarded to those
who had significant contribution to the relief
effort following the Earthquake.
The Calabrian-Sicilian Earthquake of 28 Dec. 1908
claimed more than 100.000 fatalities and it is the
deadliest of the European history.
The epicenter was in the Straits of Messina
(between Sicily and the Italian peninsula).
Following the earthquake, a tidal wave (tsunami)
swept ashore and destroyed 90% of the buildings
in the cities of Messina in Sicily and Reggio di
Calabria on the mainland, as well as in many other
towns and villages along the shores.
