Italy WWI Silver Military Cross with Crown for Long Service XVI for 40 Years for NCOs by the Military Union Marked 800

ITALY: Official Italian military service cross in 
silver, awarded for 25 or 40 years to NCOs 
and enlisted men, despite bearing the “XVI” (16 
years) marking. 
This is the official Military Union issue, with 
silver content mark(800)between the arms. 
Authorized under the 1912 Royal Decree. 
The royal decree described as base award the 
Cross for the 16 (XVI) years of service and 
instructed that the Crosses of the awards for 
more years (25 and 40 years) would keep "the 
same cross" with the addition of the Crown.  
As a result of the unclear decree this same 
cross (XVI) was officially awarded for 25 or 40 
years of service while some makers adopted the 
numbers XXV (25) and XL (40) for their 
respective crosses.
A rare and regulation-correct example.
