ITALY: WW1 Cross of War Merit, with Gladius 
sword - "FERT" citation (FERT, Fides Est 
Regni Tutela (Latin: "Faith is the protector of 
[our] Kingdom"): the motto of the Royal 
House of Savoy-Sardinia and Italy). 
The Cross was instituted in 1918, by King 
Vittorio Emmanuel, while the sword was 
introduced in 1922.
