ITALY: WW1 Commemorative Medal for the 1st
Field Artillery Regiment "Taurinense" - 5th
Battery.
On the obverse: Saint Barbara (Patron Saint of
Artillery, for the Armies of the Christian Countries)
On the reverse: The motto "Nulla Via Invia"
(Latin: No road is Impassable)
The 1st Artillery Regiment was established in
1909 under the command
of Major Peter Lanfranco. It participated in the
Italo-Turkish War over Libya (1911-1912) and in
WW1 with the groups "Susa", "Aosta", "Pinerolo"
and "Mondovi." In 1935 it was renamed as the
"1st Artillery Regiment "Taurinense"" and framed
in the Alpine Division "Pusteria" participated in
the war in Ethiopia.
During WW2 it initially operated in France while
during 1942-1943 it was relocated to Montenegro
under the chain of command of the 1st Alpine
Division "Taurinense".
Following the Italian capitulation, the entire
"Taurinense" Division was dissolved & disarmed
by the Germans, many men were sent as PoW to
German Camps, some joined the RSI Troops,
while some were executed.
The majority of the survivors of the Regiment
joined the Italian Partisan Division "Garibaldi"
until November 1944.
A scarce medal.
