ITALY: Knight's Cross in the Order of Saint
Maurice and Saint Lazarus.
The Order was instituted in 1816 by King
Vittorio Emanuele of Sardinia.
It was awarded, mostly to Catholic recipients
(Italian and non Italian) during the period of
the Italian Monarchy for outstanding and
meritorious Services to Italy.
After the end of WW2, the Italian Republic no
longer recognized further awards of the Order,
however the Italian Royal Family in exile (King
Umberto II and Crown Prince Vittorio
Emanuele) kept awarding the Decoration as
Dukes of Savoy and Grandmasters of the
Order.
This example is of the WW1 period.
