Italy: WW1 Commemorative Medal for the Launch
of the Cruiser R.N. Libia.
With the motto: "Italy Holds the Sword of Ancient
Rome".
Bronze medal, signed by d'Agostini.
R.N. Libia (Regia Nava Libia - Royal Ship Libya)
was a protected cruiser, that had originally been
laid down in 1907 for the Ottoman Navy.
She was based on the Ottoman cruiser Hamidiye
and was to be named Drama.
The ship however, had not been completed by the
outbreak of the Italo-Turkish War in 1911 and so
she was seized by the Italian Regia Marina (Royal
Navy), she was launched in 1912 and was
completed in 1913.
She participated in WW1 and was stationed for
nearly 10 years in China.
R.N. Libia was decommissioned in 1937.
A scarce medal.
