The Giuseppe Garibaldi-class was a group of 10
armored cruisers built for the Italian Navy (Regia
Marina) in the 1890s.
RN Varese was completed in 1901.
The ship made several deployments to the Eastern
Mediterranean and the Levant until 1910 when was
recalled and was subsequently stationed at Suda
Bay, Crete. She took part in the Italo-Turkish War
of 1911–12 (provided naval gunfire support for the
Italian Army in Libya and bombarded the defenses
of the Dardanelles).
She served during WW1 but just like the rest of the
Italian Fleet, the ship's activities were limited due
to the threat of the Austro-Hungarian submarines.
RN Varese became a training ship in 1920.
She was crapped in 1923.
A scarce medal.
