ITALY: WW1 Silver Commemorative Medal of the
6th Army (Armata Altipiani - Plateau Army).
Maker marked SJ (Stefano Johnson, Milan).
On the obverse: Britannia, Marianne and Italia
Turrit (for Great Britain, France and Italy
respectively).
On the reverse: The Arms of Great Britain, Italy
and France over the inscriptions "NELLA FEDE
FRATELLI E NELLA VITTORIA" (Brothers in Faith
and in Victory) and "ARMATA ALTIPIANI" (Plateau
Army).
Ribbon: A bow in the national colors of the three
Allied countries.
The medal was an unofficial award - an initiative
of General Luca Montuori, commander of the
Italian 6th Army - that was issued in 1919 to the
officers of the Italian, British and French forces
that participated in the 2nd Battle of the Piave,
15 - 24 Jun. 1918 under his command.
In March 1924, however, the medal was officially
recognized (together with a respective Cross) by
the Italian authorities.
The 2nd Battle of the Piave was a major Austro-
Hungarian offensive (57 Divisions under the
command of Colonel General Arthur Arz von
Straussenburg against 58 Italian, 3 British and 2
French Divisions under Marshal Armando Diaz)
with main objective the crossing of the River
Piave.
Despite heavy losses, the battle ended as a
decisive Allied victory that deprived the Austro-
Hungarian Army the ability to launch any future
major offensive on the Italian Front.
The medal is scarce as it was awarded only to
officers.
