ITALY: WW2 Commemorative Military Medal for
the Italian Expedition (Campaign) in Albania
(7 - 16 Apr. 1939).
This is the Type "C" version of the medal
(probably the rarest version).
The examples of this version are unmarked,
but they were produced by the house of Lorioli,
in Milan.
The Medal was instituted in 1940 to be awarded
to military and civilian participants in the Italian
occupation of Albania.
The number "XVII" (17) refers to the 17th year
of fascist rule in Italy (since 1922).
The Italian campaign in Albania lasted just 9
days, as the Italian forces faced practically no
resistance and suffered negligible casualties.
Following the Italian victory, the Albanian King
Zog I forced into exile, on 15 Apr. 1939 Albania
withdrew from the League of Nations and the
country became part of the Italian Empire, as
a separate kingdom in personal union with the
Italian Crown.
