ITALY: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the
XXX (30th) Colonial Battalion of the Italian
Royal Corps of Colonial Troops (Askaris).
The XXX Colonial Battalion was formed in
1936 in Abbi Addi (in the Tembien region of
Ethiopia).
The Battalion took part in the defense of
Italian East Africa (Jun. 1940-Nov. 1941)
against British and Commonwealth forces
(assisted by small numbers of Free French
troops and the Belgian Force Publique of
Congo) that invaded from Sudan, Kenya
and the Belgian Congo, in the Allied
operation that is known as the East African
Campaign.
By the end of Nov. 1941, organized Italian
resistance in East Africa ended with the
fall of Gondar.
The XXX Colonial Battalion had already
followed the fate of the 3rd Colonial
Brigade (Col. Maraventano) and had
surrendered to Sudanese and Abyssinian
units in Apr. 1941, following the fall of Addis
Ababa.
The medal is scarce.
