Italy: WW2 Commemorative medal of the 48th
Infantry Division "Taro" of the Royal Italian Army,
for the War against Greece (28 Oct. 1940 - 3 May
1941).
On the obverse: The battles the Regiment
participated in during the Campaign.
On the reverse: The motto "Forward at Any Cost"
and the dates of the Greek-Italian War.
The medal is maker marked by Boeri, Roma.
The 48th Infantry Division "Taro" arrived in
Albania on 30 Nov. 1940.
By mid-November, the Greeks had already
stopped the Italian invasion just inside Greek
territory and after completing its mobilization,
the Greek Army counter-attacked and pushed the
Italians back into Albania.
The "Taro" Division together with units
temporarily assigned from other shattered
Italian formations were tasked to organize the
defense in the Shkumbin river valley and to make
a stand at Guri i Llenges - Shkumbin line.
The defensive line never broke despite the Greek
pressure, while during the Italian Spring
Offensive the Division managed to capture Guri
i Topit even though the Sping Offensive itself
was a complete failure.
The Division remained in the same positions
during the entire Battle of Greece until 23 April
1941, being thus one of the very few Italian
Formations that managed to hold their positions
against the Greeks.
A scarce medal.
