Italy: WW2 Commemorative Medal of the 2nd
Infantry Division "Sforzesca" of the Royal Italian
Army.
Obverse: The Units of the Division (53rd and 54th
Infantry Regiments, 17th Artillery Regiment, 30th
Blackshirt Legion).
The cupola of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio,
symbol of Novara - garrison of the Division.
Dated 1941.
Reverse: The Trebeshina Mountain and the battles
the Division took part in during the Greco-Italian
War.
The motto "Semper Ulterius" (Latin: Always
Further).
The 2nd Infantry Division "Sforzesca" was formed
in 1861 and was classified as "Mountain Infantry
Division".
During WW2 the Division fought initially in France
(1940).
In 1941 the Division was transferred to Albania
(area of Tepeleni) to re-enforce the Italian effort
on the Greco-Italian War.
It faced the Hellenic Army for the 1st time on 28
Jan. 1941 in the battle of Scindeli and took part
in the failed Italian Spring Offensive (Mar. 1941 -
battles of Klisura and Trebeshina)
The Sforzesca was one of the 10 Italian Divisions
that formed the Italian Expeditionary Corps in
Russia (CSIR - July 1941) and took part in the
Operation Barbarossa (the invasion of USSR).
A scarce medal.
