Italy: Commemorative medal for the launch of the
Heavy Cruiser R.N. Trento, in 1927.
Signed S.J. for Stefano Johnson, Milan.
RN Trento was the 1st of two Trento-class heavy
cruisers built for the Italian Royal Navy. The ship
was laid down in Jun. 1925, was launched in Oct.
1927 and was commissioned in Dec. 1929.
RN Trento frequently served as the flagship of the
Cruiser Division throughout the 1930s and saw
extensive action during WW2 (Battles of Calabria,
Cape Spartivento and Cape Matapan, convoy
escorts to North Africa and interdicting British
convoys to Malta.)
During the attack on a British convoy in Jun. 1942,
RN Trento was torpedoed by a Bristol Beaufort
torpedo bomber and then sunk by the submarine
HMS Umbra.
A scarce medal.
