Italy Spanish Civil War Commemorative Medal 1936 1939 by Johnson & Affer Type A

ITALY: Commemorative medal for the Italian 
Volunteers of the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 
1939)- Type A. 
This is the rarest version of the 1st type of 
the medal, by Affer, maker marked “SJ” for 
Stefano Johnson, Milan. 
Only a few such medals were produced as 
Johnson introduced his own version of the 
medal a few months later.
On the reverse: “War for the Liberation and 
the Unification of Spain, 17 July 1936” 
The medal was introduced in 1938 and this 
type of ribbon was instituted in 1940. 
Another more common example of the medal 
exists (similar obverse but different reverse 
side and unsigned). 
A very rare medal.
