JAPAN: Commemorative Medal for the Great War
1914-1918.
In its rare box of issue.
The medal was awarded to the men of the Anglo-
Japanese force that captured the German Colony
of Tsing-Tao and the German Pacific Islands in
1914 to 1915.
It was also awarded to the crews of the Japanese
Fleet (the 2nd Special Squadron consisted of the
Cruiser Akashi and 8 destroyers under Admiral
Sato Kozo) that based in Malta participated in
the naval operations in the Mediterranean Sea
(1917 - 1918).
The obverse of this medal is identical to the
Medal for the Siberian Intervention 1918-1920.
The difference lies on the reverse side where the
WW1 Medal has a single vertical line of Japanese
characters (instead of 2) and on the fact that it is
a lot rarer.
