Lithuania: Medal for the Independence of
Lithuania.
Signed by Huguenin Freres (at La Locle,
Switzerland).
In its box of issue.
On the obverse: A female figure bearing a
standard with the rising sun in the background.
On the reverse: "PER AMZIUS BUDEJE LAISVE
LAIMEJOM PER AUKAS IR PASISVENTIMA,
1918-1928" (We won our freedom through ages
of sacrifice and dedication).
The medal was established in 1928, on the
occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the
Independence of Lithuania.
It was designed by Juozas Zikaras and
produced by the Swiss manufacturer H. Freres.
In total 50.000 medals were ordered and by
1940 44.000 of them were awarded to:
- Participants of the 3 Wars for the
Independence of Lithuania (against the
Bolsheviks Dec. 1918- Aug. 1919, against the
West Russian Volunteer Army (Bermontians)
Jun. 1919 - Dec. 1919 and against Poland Aug.
1920 - Dec. 1920) .
- "Book Smugglers" who distributed books in
the Lithuanian language during the period of
its prohibition.
- "Knights of the Cross of Vytis"
- Participants of the Klaipeda Revolt(1923)
- Those who rendered public service in the
early days of Independence (1918-1919).
The medal was suppressed after the Russian
occupation of the Baltic States (1940) and
today this original version is hard to find.
