NAZI GERMANY: Kreta Badge of the100th Mountain
Infantry Regiment (Alpine Hunters- Gebirgsjaeger)
for the Battle of Crete (20 May- 01 Apr. 1941).
Obverse: A caique and the inscriptions "KRETA"
(Crete) and "15 G.J.R.100" (15th Company, 100th
Mountain Infantry Regiment).
Reverse: The Edelweiss - emblem of the Mountain/
Alpine Troops.
The badge was being worn as a pendant/hanger
hanged by leather or fabric cord.
The Regiment participated in the Battle of Crete
(Operation Merkur/Mercury) as a Unit of the 5th
Mountain Division.
The initial plan for the Mountain Infantry was to
be transported to Crete by sea aboard caiques
and cutters. Both attempts to land on the island
on May 21 and 22 failed with heavy losses when
the respective troop-convoys were intercepted
by the British fleet.
Finally, with the Maleme airport in Chania in
German hands and secured, the Regiment was
transported to the island by air, on May 22,
aboard Junkers Ju-52 planes.
The 100th Mountain Infantry Regiment stayed
on the island of Crete until Dec. 1941.
A scarce highly sought after badge.
