Poland: WW2 Monte Cassino Commemorative
Cross. Numbered (49604).
The Monte Cassino Cross was instituted in 1944
by the Polish Government in exile (in London) to
be awarded to all soldiers of the 2nd Polish Army
Corps who took part in the battle of Monte
Cassino in Italy (11-17 May 1944) and under the
command of General Władysław Anders played
a crucial role in capturing the strategic point of
Monte Cassino Monastery, which had long
blocked the Allied advance up the Italian
peninsula towards Rome.
A total of 50.000 crosses were ordered and 48.498
crosses were actually awarded (serial numbers 1
to 48.498).
This Cross is one of the 1502 numbered crosses
that were never awarded.
A fine example of a heavily copied scarce medal.
