Poland: WW2 Medal for the Members of the
Polish 1st Grenadier Division, who fought in
France as part of the Polish Army in Exile.
After the capitulation of Poland in 1939 many
Polish fled to France where they continued
fighting against the Germans.
The 1st Grenadier Division was formed in 1939
from volunteers of the Polish diaspora in
France, which were particularly numerous in
the coal-producing regions of Flanders as
well as from Polish soldiers who managed to
escape from Poland following the German
invasion.
The Division took part in the battle of France
and saw action in the Battle of Lagarde (area
of Lorraine) against the German Wehrmacht.
The Unit was disbanded by its CO General
Bronisław Duch on 21 June 1940.
Altogether during the Battle of France the 1st
Grenadier Division lost approximately 5200
men.
The inscription "4444 WYCONAC" was the
secret code that was used to direct the men
of the Division to escape to Great Britain
and continue the war in the Free Polish Units.
A rare medal as the strength of the 1st
Grenadier Division was 16.180 men and the
medal was awarded in 1970 only to the
surviving veterans.
