SPAIN: Commemorative Medal for the Rif
Campaign (North Morocco) against the Berbers.
The Rif Campaign took place during the period
1908 -1909 following a Berber attack on Spanish
mines.
After the initial failures (the Spanish Army in the
area was poorly equipped and trained, outdated
and outnumbered) and following the arrival of
regular reinforcements from Spain, the Spanish
managed to prevail and even expanded their rule
deeper in the Morocco coast.
The medal was instituted in 1910, during the reign
of King Alfonso XIII.
It was awarded to Spanish military personnel for
meritorious service and it is quite rare.
