SPAIN: Ifni Sahara Campaign Medal - Decoration,
1st Class (gilt), for Officers.
The medal was instituted in 1958, in 2 classes,
for the participants of the respective campaign
in the Spanish West Africa.
The Ifni War, also called the Forgotten War in
Spain (la Guerra Olvidada), was a series of armed
incursions into Spanish West Africa which may be
seen as part of the general movement of
decolonization that swept Africa throughout the
later half of the 20th century.
The War was conducted primarily by elements of
the Moroccan Army of Liberation, began in
October 1957 culminated with the unsuccessful
for the Moroccans siege of Sidi Ifni.
The Spanish counter attack in 1958 destroyed the
Saharan Army of Liberation.
In April 1959, the governments of Spain and
Morocco signed the Treaty of Angra de Cintra.
Morocco obtained the region of Tarfaya excluding
the colonies of Sidi Ifni and the Spanish Sahara.
The Spanish Colonial Forces withdrew from West
Africa in 1975.
A very fine example of a rare medal.
