SPAIN - Soviet Union: Trench art model of the
Soviet Polikarpov I-16 Ishak fighter aircraft.
The fuselage and the wings of the airplane are
made of artillery shell parts.
Note the details of the engine, the wings and of
the landing system.
The I-16 was introduced in the mid-1930s and
formed the backbone of the Soviet Air Force at
the beginning of World War II.
The I-16 fighter, nicknamed "Ishak" ("Donkey")
by Soviet pilots, participated in the Second Sino-
Japanese War and the Spanish Civil War where
it was called the Rata ("Rat") by the Nationalists
or Mosca ("Fly") by the Republicans.
The Finnish nickname for the I-16 was Siipiorava
("Flying Squirrel").
