OTTOMAN EMPIRE - TURKEY: Bronze Patriotic
Medal for the Suppression of the Bulgarian April
Uprising in 1876.
Dated AH1293 (1876 A.D.)
On the obverse: Tughra of Sultan Abdul Aziz
(Reign: 1861-1876).
Reverse: Inscription in the old Turkish Alphabet
(Arabic characters):
"Glorified His Victory Minted in Constantinople
1293".
The Bulgarian April Uprising erupted on 20 April
1876 when Bulgarian rebels attacked the HQ
(headquarters) of the Ottoman police in the town
of Koprivshtitsa.
While the uprising against the Turks was rapidly
suppressed (by mid May 1876), the brutality and
the slaughters that characterized the Ottoman
response against the rebels, ignited the interna-
tional outcry against the Ottoman Turks, led to
the Russo-Turkish War of 1877 , and following
the Turkish defeat to the Congress of Berlin and
the establishment of the independent Bulgarian
principality.
The medal is rare as Sultan Abdul Aziz was
deposed by his ministers on 30 May 1876, just
a few days after the suppression of the Revolt.
