The medal was instituted by Sultan Abdulaziz in
1869.
Obverse: The Sultan’s tughra and crescent.
Reverse: Map of the island of Crete under the
word "Girid" (Crete) with the date 1285 (AD. 1869).
About 50,000 of these medals were awarded.
