VATICAN: “Bene Merenti” Bronze Medal of
Pope Pius XII, for the year 1942.
("Bene Merenti – Latin for: Success to those
who deserve it“).
Maker marked by Lorioli, Milan and signed
by the great sculptor and medalist Aurelio
Mistruzzi (1880-1960).
On the obverse: The portrait of Pope Pius XII.
Circumscribed: "PIUS XII PONTIFEX MAXIMUS
ANNO XXV AB INITIO EPISCOPATU" (Pope
Pius XII, 25th Year Since the Initiation of his
Bishophood). Dated MDCCCCXLII (1942).
On the reverse: Inscribed "OPUS IUSTI TIAE
PAX" (Latin: The Work of Justice is Peace)
The medal was issued in 1942, in order to
mark the 25th anniversary of the appointment
of Pope Pius XII (at that time (1917) Father
Pacelli) as Ambassador of Vatican (Nuncio)
to Bavaria, titular Bishop of Sardis and at
the same time his promotion to Archbishop.
The medal is quite rare as it was awarded
only to selected clergy, in order to reward
long and exceptional service to the Catholic
Church.
