Battle of Mentana where a joined force of 
3000 Papal and 2000 French troops managed 
to temporarily stop the advancing forces of 
General Garibaldi in their attempt to seize 
Rome. 
The medal was instituted by Pope Pius IX. 
A hard to find award in nickel silver, issued
to NCOs and other ranks.
