VATICAN: Lateran Cross "Gold (bronze gilt)",
1st Class, with the respective miniature, in
its original box of issue (stamped with the
Papal State Coat of Arms on the lid) by the
School of the Art of Medal Making in Rome
(instituted in 1907).
The decoration was established in 1903 by
Pope Leo XIII, in 3 classes, to be awarded to
members of the Church (clergy) as a
recognition of merit.
It is named after the Basilica of St. John in
Lateran (Vatican Cathedral in Rome).
The medal has been crafted in a number of
designs: with or without an adjoining circle,
as well as a solid medal with a cross in relief.
The last award of the Cross was recorded in
1977.
The "gold" class example is very hard to
find especially boxed together with its
miniature.
This is the 2nd type of the cross made during
the interwar era.
