VATICAN: Commander's Cross in the Civil
Division of the Equestrian Order of the Holy
Sepulcher of Jerusalem - rare example for
Ladies.
The Order originates from the era of the 1st
Crusade and the knights who protected the
Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem but it was re-
instituted in its current form in 1847 (Papacy
of Pope Pius IX).
The Order is primarily honorific.
Its principal mission is to reinforce the
practice of Christian life by its members, to
sustain and assist the religious, spiritual,
charitable and social works of the Catholic
Church as well as to conserve and propagate
the faith and the rights of the Catholic Church
in the Holy Lands.
As it is a Papal honor, the aspirant members
must be practicing Catholics, recommended
by their local bishop, supported by several
members of the Order and are required to
make a generous donation as well as an
annual financial offering for works undertaken
in the Holy Land.
Since 1888 the Civil Division of the Order is
also open to women.
This is a luxurious (enameled on both sides)
post WW1 example, most likely of the 1930s.
A hard to find award.
