This is an officer's award, instituted in 1849, 
for meritorious service & inspired leadership 
in battle. 
The medal is hallmarked for silver with the 
old Austrian mark (Diana's head),  maker 
marked "VM" (V. Mayers und Sohn, Wien - 
Vienna) and also "A" (the quality mark for 
silver of the Vienna Mint).
