The Belgian Army defended Liege against the
assault of the German forces in 1914 ( 5 -16
Aug.).
The city garrison of 70.000 Belgians and 12
forts managed to repulse the initial attacks of
the German 2nd Army (General Ludendorff,
320.000 men) but the city finaly fell to the
German hands.
