FRANCE: Silver Colonial medal, of the pre WW1
era, with "Algeria" clasp of the rare snap type.
This is the bifacial initial type (1894 - 1913) of the
medal, by Mercier, designed by George Lemaire
(signed on the obverse, with his initials on the
reverse side) and marked "Argent" (silver) on the
rim.
Additional hallmarks (the "Mercier diamond" and
the wild boar head silver mark) on the crossed
palm leaves of the medal and on the clasp.
The Colonial medal was established in 1893 and
was awarded to military personnel who operated
in French colonies and protectorates.
In total there are established 52 official and 63
unofficial bars for the colonial medal.
The award was replaced in 1962 by the Overseas
