FRANCE: Order of the Black Star of Dahomey,
Knight's Cross
Early example (WW1 era) in its box of issue,
by the famous medalist Arthus Bertrand,
Paris.
The Order was instituted in 1889 and was
later succeeded by the Order of National
Merit (in 1969), as the former French Colony
of Dahomey became a fully independent
country in 1960 - and changed its name later
on to Benin.
It was awarded in recognition of faithful
services to the French Colonial Forces, not
only in Dahomey but in all the French Africa
Colonies (Senegal, Sudan, Niger, Guinea,
Dahomey and the Ivory Coast, Congo, Gabon,
Tchad and Oubangi-Chari).
