France: WW2 cap badge of the Maginot Line
troops.
Rare example, marked by Artus Bertrand on
the reverse.
The Maginot Line, named after the French
Minister of War Andre Maginot, was a line of
concrete fortifications, obstacles and
weapon installations that France constructed
on its borders with Switzerland, Germany
and Luxembourg during the 1930s.
The German invasion plan of 1940 was
designed to deal with that specific defense
Line.
A decoy force was deployed opposite the
Maginot Line, while a second Army Group
violated the neutrality of Belgium,
Luxembourg and the Netherlands and
through the Ardennes Forest, avoided a
direct assault on the fortifications, took the
Franco-British by surprise and forced the
rapid collapse of the Allied defense in
France.
