FRANCE: WW2 Medal for the Italian Campaign,
1943-1944.
Signed: Carlier Del Benard SC.
The medal was created in 1953. It is based on
the medal for the Italian Campaign of 1859
and it replaced officially the "Italie" (Italy) bar on
the French WW2 Commemorative Medal. It was
awarded to members of the Free French
Expeditionary Corps in Italy for the period
from 1 Dec. 1943 to 25 July 1944. The Corps
took part in the Battle of Garigliano (near
Monte Cassino) and played a significant role
in the fall of Rome.
The WW2 Italian Campaign, started with the
invasion of Sicily in 1943 and continued with
a series of Allied beach landings and land
battles on the Italian mainland (Anzio, Salerno
and Monte Cassino) towards Rome until the
surrender of German forces in Italy with the
end of the war in Europe in May 1945.
