Imperial Germany - Prussia: "Alsen Cross" -
for Combatants
Military medal, awarded to combatants that
took part in the assault on Alsen, an island
in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Schleswig
during the Prussian War with Denmark over
Schleswig Holstein.
The assault on Alsen was the last battle
of the war with Denmark.
During the operation 2,500 Prussians, under
the command of General Karl Eberhard
Herwarth von Bittenfeld, crossed the
Alssund in small boats and broke the lines
of the Danish who had retreated on the
island.
Following the result of the battle, Denmark
had to renounce its right to Schleswig-
Holstein in favor of Prussia and Austria.
The Cross was instituted in 1864 by King
Wilhelm.
It was designed by the Prussian court
medalist Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich
This is a privately made example of the
medal, being sold as vintage copy and
priced accordingly.
