Imperial Germany - Grand Duchy of Baden:
Meritorious Service Medal of Friedrich II,
Silver Class.
Signed "RM".
Hallmarked on the rim.
The award was created in a different form (in
2 classes - large and small Silver Medal of
Merit) in 1769 by Grand Duke Karl-Friedrich.
This version, with the portrait of Grand Duke
Friedrich II, was established in 2 classes
(silver and gold) and was issued since 1908
and until the end of WW1, in 1918.
This is the rare silver example of the period
1908-1916.
After 1916, due to the war shortages the
medal was produced in zinc alloy.
Only 3050 medals were produced in silver, while
about 100.000 medals were awarded in total.
