WW1 War Badge - Decoration of Honor in Iron.
The badge was instituted in 1917 by the Grand
Duke of Hesse Darmstadt Ernst Ludwig, on the
occasion of his 25th anniversary on the throne
(the number 25 is shown at the lower part of
the monogram).
The decoration was awarded to members of
the Armed Forces of Hesse with at least 2
years of front line service.
The badge is made of iron while the inner part
with the EL monogram is made of zinc.
Various examples of the badge do exist, where
the monogram can be found silver or silvered.
The badge is rare.
