GREECE: Royal Gendarmerie War Cross, 1946, 
for the Greek Civil War  (1946 - 1949). 
The War Cross of the Royal Gendarmerie was 
established in 1946. It was awarded to Officers, 
NCOs and men of the Gendarmerie for acts of 
bravery and heroism on the battlefield against 
the Communist insurgents.
The Greek Civil War was the struggle between 
the Hellenic Royal Army or National Army (with
support from Great Britain and the US) and the 
Democratic Army of Greece (DSE), the military 
branch of the Greek Communist Party. 
The result was the defeat of the Communist 
insurgents by the government forces and the 
establishment of a West Oriented Government 
in Greece.
