for the operations of the Greek Civil War  (1946 - 
1949). 
The War Cross of the Royal Gendarmerie was 
established in 1946. It was awarded to Officers, 
NCOs and men of the Gendarmerie for acts of 
bravery and heroism on the battlefield, during the 
operations against the Communist insurgents.
The Greek Civil War (1946 - 1949) was the struggle 
between the Greek Royal Army (backed up by 
Great Britain and the United States) and the 
Democratic Army of Greece (DSE), the military 
branch of the Greek Communist Party (backed up 
by Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria). 
The result was the defeat of the Communist 
insurgents by the government forces and the 
establishment of a West Oriented Government 
in Greece.
