1st Sino - Japanese War (1894 - 1895) over Korea. 
The medal was instituted in 1895.
Despite the fact that the Japanese Forces were 
outnumbered, their superior tactics and 
equipment helped them score a decisive victory. 
Following the Treaty of Shimonoseki, Japan 
expanded its sovereignty 
over Korea and Taiwan.
