The Cross was instituted in 1813 by King
Friedrich Wilhelm III and was designed by Karl
Friedrich Schinkel.
It was used in 1870 during the Franco-
Prussian War, during WW1 and WW2.
The Iron Cross was issued for bravery in the
field and for military merit.
